사실 나라마다 언론 발전의 역사와 과정 그리고 속도가 다릅니다. 하지만 모바일웹이 저널리즘의 변화를 몰아치는 것 만큼은 사실입니다!

언론자유가 가장 발달했다는 미국도 불과 50년전까지 Objective Reporting이란 모토속에서 “독자가 판단”하라는 기조를 유지했습니다. 반대로 말하자면 “아니면 말고”식의 책임회피적인 기조였죠. 매카시즘 이후 언론은 지대한 반성을 하게됩니다. 언론이 여론을 호도해서 얼마나 많은 사람들을 잘못된 인식의 길로 빠져들게 했는가 하는 뼈져린 반성끝에 Interpretative Reporting이 새롭게 등장했습니다.

지금까지 이어지는 기조입니다. 대다수 독자가 읽는대로 믿는 성향이 있기 때문에 펙트와 사례 그리고 반대의견을 포함시켜 글이 길어지는 한이 있다해도 독자의 옳바른 판단을 유도할 수 있는 Complete Scientific Writing 형식이었습니다. 탐사보도가 바로 이런 기조를 유지하며 발전했고 뉴욕타임스의 “통킹만사건” 보도, 워싱턴 포스트의 “워터게이트” 보도가 그 산물이었습니다. 이후 언론은 독자의 신뢰를 바탕으로 가공할 권력을 가지게 됐습니다!

하지만 언론까지 권력의 단물에 빠지는 속성은 어쩔 수 없는 현상인가 봅니다. 특히 2001년 2차 걸프전은 마녀사냥에 미친 언론의 모습을 그대로 투영했습니다. 자국의 피해를 보복심리로 승화시켜 힘없는 사람을 마구 죽여도 된다는 논리제공의 선봉장이 바로 미국언론이었으니까요. 지금 뼈아픈 반성이 진행되고 있긴 하지만 역사가 이를 어캐볼지…

반면 척박한 한국 언론의 역사를 보면 여전히 Objective Reporting에 머물고 의도적으로 스스로 발전을 가로막는 모습입니다. 또 기득권 유지를 위한 발악의 결과물이 종편선정입니다. 한정된 지면과 기사 한 꼭지에 하루 하루를 소진해야하는 환경이 존재하는 한 국내 언론의 발전은 기대하긴 어려울 것입니다. 제아무리 옳고 그름을 판단하는 기자들이 있다해도 거대 조직의 이익 앞에 고개숙일 따름이죠.

하지만 가만히 앉아 주는대로 받아먹던 정보소비시대도 끝장난지 오랩니다. 인터넷 때문에 이젠 누구나의 정보생산시대를 열었습니다. 기사형식과는 상관없이 기술발전이 가져다준 기회죠. 저널리즘이 컨텐츠 함량에 의해 결정나는 것이 아니라 이젠 딜리버리 메카니즘에 좌우된다는 생각입니다.

처음엔 컴퓨터 웹이었지만 휴대성이 떨어집니다. 이젠 APP과 모바일 웹을 통해 삼라만상의 실상이 손끝에서 손끝으로 전달되고 있습니다. 최근 이집트와 리비아 등지에서 벌어진 시민봉기사태를 통해 확인된 것이 바로 “트위터 혁명”이니까요. 이집트에선 아예 신생아들의 이름을 “페이스북”이라고 까지 지어준답니다.

한국의 제도권 언론이 이런 페라디임 쉬프트를 제대로 보고 있을지…약간은 고소한 웃음이 납니다. 그래서 아이패드와 타블렛, 아이폰과 스마트폰 등의 모빌 웹 세상이 진정 세로운 세상의 물꼬를 트는 “보이지 않는 손”이란 것을 확신합니다.
